Seasonal Gardening

robin in the snowWinter bird feeding

Food and water should be put out on a regular basis. In harsh weather it’s a good idea to feed twice a day is possible.

At this time of the year birds need high energy foods (high fat food) due to the cold weather. Maintaining body reserves helps birds to survive frosty weather.

Feeds such as fat balls, suet feed, Peanuts, and fatty food bars are all great foods for the winter.
Clean your feeders and tables on a regular basis ensure wasted feed does not build up.

Dirty tables or feeders can harbor bacteria which can transfer from sick birds.  Brush off debris every time you put out fresh food and scrub the table with a mild disinfectant solution every few weeks.
Annual maintenance is best carried out in autumn. Clean the table tightens screws and make sure it is still a safe place for birds to feed. Don't expect a wooden bird table to last for ever. As it weathers, it becomes more difficult to clean and after a couple of seasons it is best to burn it and get a new one.
